What is Happiness?
So, while I was at school today, I was sitting in the Tilley Center waiting for class to start, and with the cafe right there I was in desperate need some sugar lol (I promise this blog has a point lol). So anyway, I head over to the cafe look at all the candy, and nothing seemed to be what I was look for. Then, the guy in front of me bought some cookies, and it was like one of those epic moments in cartoons where the angelic chorus sings, and there is a ray of light. Not really, but that is how it played out in my head lol. I bought three cookie chucked full of chocolate and proceeded to walk back to my chair. While I was sitting there enjoying my cookies, a bold comment on the Otis Spunkmeyer bag stuck out at me. It said, "Happiness is a fresh-baked cookie." Knowing my obsession with cookies, let alone fresh-baked ones, I agreed. Then I began to think, what is happiness? It's definitely not just a warm cookie. Quotes stated filling my head. "Happiness is a warm puppy", "Happiness is like a butterfly", "Happiness is a form of courage", and even the Beatles said "Happiness is a warm gun." All of these are radically different, and if one these actually were happiness, then we would be unhappy unless we had or did any of these things. So, what exactly is happiness? Webster's defines happiness as a state of well-being and contentment or a pleasurable or satisfying experience. The world is constantly telling us that happiness come with how much stuff we have, particularly money. Then, a children's song popped in my head, "Happiness is, To know the Savior, Living a life that's worth the living, Taking a trip that leads to Heaven, Happiness is the Lord, Happiness is the Lord." I was so busy thinking about what happiness was, that my thoughts were getting in the way of the ultimate answer to what happiness really is. Psalm 144:15 says "Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the LORD!" So, may we not forget the source of our true joy and happiness, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and may it be out goal to share it with those around us.
